The collar is a stylish accessory and an important element of dog control. Often, novice breeders find it difficult to correctly determine the size of the collar, but too large or small, can cause severe discomfort for the dog. In this article, you will learn how to choose the size of collar for dogs (small, medium and large) by breed, neck size and weight.

Measuring Your Dog for a Collar

The main measure of a dog, according to which collar will be selected – is the circumference of the neck. Please note that this parameter can change significantly with age (especially in the first 2 years of life when active growth occurs).

To determine the circumference of the neck, we will need a centimeter tape or a ruler and a regular ribbon (even a piece of yarn or a piece of fabric will do).

How to Take Measurement :

  1. Put the dog in a rack or sit it down. If this is an active puppy, ask your partner to hold it in place.
  2. Wrap a centimeter of tape (or plain tape) at the base of the neck so that there is a small space between it and the dog’s body. For small dogs, the allowance should be 1 finger, for medium and large dogs-2 fingers.
  3. Look at the number on the centimeter. If the measurement was made using a regular ribbon, attach the resulting segment to the ruler and find out the number that will indicate the parameter of the neck circumference of the animal.

Please note that the measurement result may not be accurate, so you should choose the collar in such a way that there is a small margin both in one tick and in the other direction.

As a rule, all sizes of dog collars are specified by manufacturers in centimeters or inches.

1 cm ≈ 0.39 in.

Conversion from one measurement system to another can be done using the following simple table:

Inches Centimeters Inches Centimeters
1 2.54 11 27.94
2 5.08 12 30.48
3 7.62 13 33.02
4 10.16 14 35.56
5 12.7 15 38.1
6 15,24 16 40.64
7 17.78 17 43.18
8 20.32 18 45.72
9 22,86 19 48.26
10 25.4 20 50.8
